Students Encouraged to Embrace Islamic Poetry

Bandar Seri BegawanBrunei Darussalam - Arts and literature, among them poetry, can be a medium for Islamic missionary.

This medium was effective during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in defending the teachings of Islam and the prophet himself from attacks by the enemies of Islam.

"The work ofpoets who served at that time, such as Sayyidina Hasan bin Thabit and Kaab bin Zuhair, were praised by Prophet Muhammad.

Therefore, we must also take advantage of this medium by encouraging students and our youths to embrace Islamic poetry."

This was yesterday highlighted by Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman in his speech at the Islamic Poetry Recital Competition for Mosque Youth Groups Nationwide which played out at the Jubli Perak Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque in Kg Jangsak.

"We are not short of these sorts of poems, produced by reputable, renowned local poets such as Yahya M S, Adi Rumi, Badaruddin H 0, Shukri Zain and remarkably, even seeing the involvement of the late Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, the 28th Sultan of Brunei.

"Unfortunately, some disregard literature, because to them it only contains words.

They do not understand the facts of civilisation.

Civilisation and humanity are a celebration of perfect physical and spiritual aspects.

Literature and its genres, including poetry, the Islamic ones in particular, are part of civilisation and humanity itself," he added.

"In correlation, it is important to note the work of poets from our homeland, which also contain deep, philosophical, valuable lessons and invaluable advice which should be ponder upon.

"It should not just be heard and forgotten.

Religious teachers, literary teachers and literary enthusiasts can also serve to make our young students and youths understand such work, teaching them not to just read the text, but also analyse, appreciate and enjoy its contents," the minister concluded.
